Austria

The Republic of Austria is a country located in the very heart of Europe. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Liechtenstein and Switzerland to the west. Its territory is largely dominated by the Alps mountain range, has numerous lakes, and the most voluminous river crossing it is the Danube. It is landlocked.

Vienna, the capital of Austria, has always been the epicenter of significant historical events where emperors established their residences, and today it is a hub for many international organizations. Salzburg, with its magnificent music festivals, is a magical city that never ceases to impress visitors with its beauty and traditions. But Austria is much more; it is a country composed of nine federated states, each with its own natural and touristic treasures. For example, the state of Styria—known as the “green heart of Austria,” in the southeast bordering Hungary and Slovenia—is a mountainous region that was very productive in the past, and the Erzberg mountain remains one of the most important mines in Europe. It is part of the Austrian wine route, which offers high-quality wines, although they are not well known in Mexico.

Incredible Austrian figures from history, music, and art have left us a cultural wealth spanning many centuries. The Habsburgs, Mozart, Strauss, Mahler, Klimt, and Schiele are some well-known names that are part of the rich history and culture of this beautiful country, whose architecture is also notable, such as the Schönbrunn Palace or the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), to mention just two.

And speaking of the Habsburgs, we know that Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph of Habsburg-Lorraine was born on July 6, 1832, in Vienna (he was assassinated on June 19, 1867, in Querétaro). At birth, he received the noble titles of Archduke of Austria and Prince of Hungary and Bohemia. Years later, he renounced these and other titles to become Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, leading the Second Mexican Empire from 1864 to 1867. He arrived at the port of Veracruz on the frigate Novara on May 28, 1864.

And for our micro-history in San Miguel de Allende, did you know that Maximilian stayed two nights in the mansion that is now our Casa Europa headquarters? That was on September 13 and 14, 1864, as recorded in the house’s historical book..
