Capturing Life in Art: The Poetics of Form

“The Poetics of Form,” brings together five exceptional artists – Kathleen Cammarata, Linda Laino, Elaine Grenier, Tom Powers, and Ri Anderson – whose works, in diverse mediums and styles, explore the beauty of form and its poetic potential. The exhibition promises to take the viewer on a mesmerizing journey that spans the ethereal and the earthly, the abstract and the figurative, and the harmonious and the discordant. Each artist in the exhibit brings a unique perspective to the theme, resulting in a diverse and thought-provoking collection of works.

When Kathleen Cammarata selects the human form in her work a story emerges. The figures in her work are androgynous beings moving in relational fields open to multiple interpretations.

Linda Laino approaches artmaking as an investigation where figures are depicted interacting with elements of nature in unusual ways. Always struggling to find beauty in the damaged, she strives towards both elegance and tension, leaving behind clues of her thought process for the viewer to piece together their conclusions.

Elaine Granier’s work explores the ambiguity and similarity of forms found in the natural world around us. Plants and animals share the same elegant geometry, and through deconstruction the essential forms are made evident. The artist’s fascination with imperfection and the natural erosion of the remains of nature eloquently reveals a hidden world.

With the pandemic in full swing in 2020, death and chaos were always present. At this time, Tom Powers began a series investigating themes of death and the afterlife, this resulted in black and white linoleum prints. Also, Powers began to focus on a seminal literary classic, Dante’s Inferno, illustrating all 34 Cantos. The impressions are more like a stream of thought and a personal interpretation, so the artist wants to encourage personal responses from each viewer.

Ri Anderson believes in making rather than taking pictures, in creating fiction over fact. She believes in extracting the extraordinary from the ordinary. Anderson’s eclectic background and interests have influenced the development of her unconventional use of the photographic medium. She uses digital point-and-shoot cameras as instruments for obtaining photographic data, then she takes that data as raw material and masterfully transforms it into complex, surreal compositions.

Cuando Kathleen Cammarata selecciona la forma humana en su trabajo, surge una historia. Las figuras de su obra son seres andróginos que se mueven en campos relacionales abiertos a múltiples interpretaciones.

Linda Laino aborda la creación artística como una investigación en la que se representan figuras que interactúan con elementos de la naturaleza de formas inusuales. Siempre luchando por encontrar la belleza en lo dañado, se esfuerza tanto por la elegancia como por la tensión, dejando pistas de su proceso de pensamiento para que el espectador reconstruya sus conclusiones.

El trabajo de Elaine Granier explora la ambigüedad y la similitud de las formas que se encuentran en el mundo natural que nos rodea. Las plantas y los animales comparten la misma geometría elegante y, a través de la deconstrucción, las formas esenciales se hacen evidentes. La fascinación del artista por la imperfección y la erosión natural de los restos de la naturaleza revela con elocuencia un mundo oculto.

En este momento, Tom Powers comenzó una serie que investigaba temas de la muerte y el más allá, lo que resultó en grabados de linóleo en blanco y negro. Ri Anderson cree en hacer más que en tomar fotografías, en crear ficción sobre hechos. Ella cree en extraer lo extraordinario de lo ordinario. Los antecedentes e intereses eclécticos de Anderson han influido en el desarrollo de su uso poco convencional del medio fotográfico. Utiliza cámaras digitales de apuntar y disparar como instrumentos para obtener datos fotográficos, luego toma esos datos como materia prima y los transforma magistralmente en composiciones complejas y surrealistas.
