OPENING EVENT: Sept. 1, 5pm

Come share a beverage, meet the artists and hear Pastor Ignacio Ramírez describe the origins and workings of Casa ABBA - the migrant sanctuary in Celaya he founded eight years ago and which the event will benefit.

It’s been a year since American television photojournalist Jennifer Moran, with camera in hand, first stepped through the steel doors of Casa ABBA - a small migrant refuge in Celaya, Mexico that has now served over 110,000 migrants. But nothing prepared her for the heart-wrenching stories she found behind those cement walls. Stories of fear, pain, loneliness and helplessness. But walking hand in hand, she found stories of astounding courage and hope in the face of unimagined obstacles. Obstacles like the mostly-young migrant amputees, who after having limbs sliced off beneath a train, are given only the briefest medical treatment, then abandoned to the streets.

Somewhere in the midst of shooting those first images and hearing the harrowing personal stories of each migrant, the idea for this multimedia exhibit was born. Moran’s intent with this layered, intense show is to expose the human side of the brave, desperate individuals behind the headlines of one of the world’s most controversial and important issues.

To expand the theme, she invited seven of San Miguel’s best known artists to join a group exhibit built around the migrant journey. Artists include art photographer Ri

Anderson; painter José Luis Arias; sculptor Marisa Boullosa; textile artist Lena Bartula; muralist/painter Jorge Prado; author/ sculptor Edward Swift; and painter Juan Zaragoza.

All artists are donating fifty-percent of their sales to this important cause.
